A publishing company/advertising agency based in Williamsburg is offering an internship opportunity this fall and spring for a student majoring in graphic design. Their core product is the monthly magazine The Health Journal but they also offer a variety of creative services outside of the paper. Some knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is required, so the position would be ideal for a junior or senior.

Two talented full-time graphic designers will serve as mentors—one is an ODU graphic design program graduate. The student will gain valuable hands-on experience with magazine layout, ad design, creation of a bi-annual newsletter for a large hospital system (in early to mid September) and much more. The hours would depend on the student's schedule and whether he/she can earn class credit. Offices are about a 45-minute drive from ODU, so a gas stipend is available to help with the cost of travel.

Why is a review necessary?
There are a limited number of seats that can be offered with the current facilities and teaching staff. A portfolio review ensures that students who are qualified and likely to succeed in the field will be offered a place in the program. Also, some students may not have adequate backgrounds in visual arts or are unable to demonstrate the skills (visual, verbal, and manual) necessary for success in the profession of graphic design. Do not assume that good grades in classes assure you of a passing evaluation on your portfolio. Course grades are determined by factors such as attendance, participation, quizzes and tests, reading assignments, process work, exercises, and software skills as well as the creative work. However, the portfolio will be judged on its own merits without reference to all these factors. The focus of the review is on the totality of the projects presented, with emphasis on your ability to demonstrate the expertise to be successful in the 300 and 400 level courses.

How will my portfolio and interview be evaluated?
The four areas of evaluation are:
Concept: awareness of contemporary issues, methodology, technical skill, creative exploration, written and oral expression.
Process: drawing/sketching, model making, site planning, verbal and writing skills.
Form: symmetry, rhythm, proportion, perspective, harmony, color, etc.
Engagement: personal and professional goals, basic understanding of the profession of visual communication design, enthusiasm and interest for your chosen profession.

What documentation should I submit for the review?
• Unofficial Transcript (all undergraduate work).
• Information Sheet (name, UID).

When will be the review be held and results given?
The review itself will take place in June before completion of the summer ARTS 370 session. Spring 370 students’ portfolios will be held until then and all candidates be reviewed at once. Results will be available the following day and reported on the Graphic Design blog via UID number.

When may I retrieve my portfolio?
The Monday following the review. Portfolios will be secured in VAB 116.

Through the normal registration process. Students that pass the review will be cleared to register for each section of ARTS 371. Placement in a specific section is determined by the standard enrollment process—faculty will make no determination on specific section assignments. Receiving a No Pass means that students are not eligible for 300 level courses and will be departmentally dropped from 300 level courses. An evaluation checklist will be placed in all portfolios indicating areas of concern. Students are urged to meet with faculty to discuss steps to improve performance. Students are also encouraged to take or retake specific courses to improve their portfolio. No Pass portfolios generally indicate that work will be best improved when supported by class structure, faculty and classmates. A paid internship is available at VMASC for Summer 2011 at $10/hour. The VMASC Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center is one of the world’s leading research centers for computer modeling, simulation, and visualization. The Center has over 50 research and administrative staff and works closely with faculty researchers from across the University. Job Opening – Art / Digital Media Student

A creative undergraduate or master’s level student is sought to assist with the design and development of digital materials. The position will involve working with a multidisciplinary team of faculty, graduate students, and client to design and program graphics for an integrated simulation/game to teach physics concepts at the high school level. This student will be responsible for the creation and/or modification of 3-D models of objects and/or humanoid characters, icons, background graphics, and audio including voice, music, and special effects.
The student will be expected to contribute artistically to the design and aesthetics of the project, as well as developing materials as instructed.
Requirements:
—A student in good academic standing at ODU.
—Experience with 3-D modeling packages, 2-D image editors, and sound recording and
editing software.
—Ability to work independently on tasks and collaboratively on multidisciplinary teams.

Logo Design Sought

The Coalition for Hearing, Education and Research (CHEAR) is looking for someone to design a logo for us. CHEAR provides hearing aids and other hearing related services to people in Hampton Roads who cannot afford appropriate treatment. It is a small, young 501(c) 3 nonprofit that is a 100% volunteer organization. In 2008, CHEAR board members partnered with ODU, EVMS and the Virginia Department of Education to establish the ODU Oral Preschool, the first program of its kind in Virginia that teaches children with hearing loss to improve their listening and speaking skills. CHEAR assists in fundraising efforts for the Oral Preschool as well. You can read more about this partnership here. It’s free and open to all, and they give away stuff like books, shirts, and a copy of Creative Suite once every 6 months. They’ve just re-tooled the group in an attempt to make it more valuable to designers.

October's meeting at the TCC Visual Arts Center in Portsmouth will look at color correction in Adobe Photoshop. Every new version seems to offer more tools to help with color correction. They'll go over all of them, in depth, as well as give examples.

Breitenberg is a Virginia Beach native and graduate of the Swarthmore College Critical Visual Studies program in 2001. He subsequently went on to graduate study in graphic design and work as an advertising copywriter in The Netherlands. For the past few years, he has been an activist for social justice while working with community groups in Africa and Nicaragua. As part of his work, he has produced regular "Field Reports" outlining his activities, which have appeared in the New York Times on line, plus major faith-based websites like Sojourners and JesusManifesto in addition to being distributed throughout his community of friends and supporters. In Memory of Robert McCullough

The Art Department is saddened by the passing of Robert McCullough, Associate Professor of graphic design on Monday, July 13. A full-time faculty member in the art department since 1980, he developed the department's emphasis in graphic design in 1988. Professor McCullough left a successful, award-winning advertising agency in the Hampton Roads region to join the faculty, first as a professor of painting. After developing the graphic design program, he helped manage its growth in the years that followed.

"His desire to interact with students and other scholarly professionals, rather than convincing the public of the merits of the various businesses that hired his crew over several years, caused him to take this unusual step for a designer, which is lucrative — in a very practical way," says Art Department chair Linda McGreevy . "But, Robert, like many of his generation, was idealistic and truly wanted to make a difference in the lives of those who would go on to convince the public of the merits of products and services as their own careers developed.

"Demanding, intense and entirely dedicated to his field, he made a big difference for many — some of whom … would only realize his significance later. The faculty, current and emeriti, full-time and adjunct, are realizing our loss now, and it is with heavy hearts that we bid him adieu," McGreevy added.

Professor McCullough's work both in fine arts and design has been exhibited nationally and in Europe, including the U.S. Department of State World Trade Show in Greece, Turkey and Israel; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Eastern Washington University, Cheney Wash.; and Contra Costa College, San Pablo, Calif. He also exhibited his work locally at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia in Virginia Beach, the Visual Arts Center in Portsmouth and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News.

Professor McCullough earned a B.F.A. degree from ODU in 1971 and an M.F.A. in design from Syracuse University in 1978. He is survived by his wife, Harriet McCullough, an adjunct assistant professor of graphic design at ODU with whom he maintained M&M, a small design agency, and a daughter and stepdaughter.

Make-It-Click, a project of researchers at EVMS is seeking a graphic design to create a poster series. The overall goal of the project is to increase the seat belt and back seat use of tweens (8-12 year olds). The project is funded by the Department of Transportation, and is taking place in elementary schools in Portsmouth. There are many elements to the project; one of which is to target the parents because we’ve learned from focus groups with the kids that the parents are a big part of the problem.

The designer will need to create 6 posters that depict Black individuals in various car safety-related scenarios. For example, one of the posters will stress the importance of compromise by parents in order to increase the back seat use of their children, and would depict the interior of a car with a mother driving and a tween sitting in the back seat. The tween will be asking his mother to change the radio station to Z104, and the mother will reply “sure.”

The posters can be pictures or illustrations; the research team just doesn’t want it to look like clip art. Also, each poster needs to have two versions: one in color and one in black and white. The black and white versions will be mass-produced by us, so the final product would need to be capable of that (i.e., converted to a computer).

The ODU Art Department presents a lecture by writer and critic Rick Poynor this Thursday, October 30, at 7:00pm in the atrium of the Barron & Ellin Gordon Galleries on Monarch Way on the ODU University Village. The event is free and open to the public.

Rick Poynor is the founder of the international review of design, Eye magazine , edited it for seven years, and is now its writer at large. He writes a column for Print magazine in New York, where he is a contributing editor, and he has written about design, media and visual culture for Blueprint, Icon, Creative Review, Frieze, Domus, I.D., Metropolis, Harvard Design Magazine, Adbusters, The Guardian, Financial Times, and many other publications. In 2003, he co-founded the weblog Design Observer, which became a leading international forum for design discussion. In 2007, he appeared extensively in Helvetica, a feature-length documentary about typography and visual communication.

Poynor’s books on design and visual arts subjects include Typography Now: The Next Wave (1991), Typographica (Laurence King Publishing, 2001), and No More Rules (Laurence King Publishing, 2003), the first critical study of graphic design and postmodernism. As a cultural critic, he is the author of three wide-ranging essay collections, Design Without Boundaries (1998), Obey the Giant: Life in the Image World (Birkhäuser, 2001 and 2007), and Designing Pornotopia: Travels in Visual Culture (Laurence King Publishing, 2006).

Poynor studied art history at Manchester University and gained an MPhil in design history at the Royal College of Art. He has been a visiting professor at the RCA and a project tutor at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. He lectures widely on design matters at public events and conferences in Europe, the United States, China and Australia. In 2004, he was guest curator of the exhibition Communicate: Independent British Graphic Design since the Sixties at the Barbican Art Gallery, London, which subsequently toured in China and Switzerland, and he edited the accompanying book.

Launch Interactive in Virginia Beach, VA is looking for a talented, versatile and motivated designer for a summer internship. Get hands-on exposure to all aspects of interactive design, from brainstorming to execution. You will be working within the team on a wide variety of tasks from site maintenance, comp production, concepting, brainstorming, banner ads, presentations, email marketing campaigns and other collateral for many of our clients.

You must have:

Familiarity with Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash
Familiarity with web design and information architecture, HTML, CSS
Strong typography and layout skills
Self motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized
Solid communication skills
Strong desire to Learn

We are looking for someone who is available 8-20 hours, 1-3 days a week. Hours are flexible.

The spring continuancy review for graphic design concentration
students will be held on Friday, April 11, 10:00am, in VAB 116.

Why?
All students in the graphic design concentration must pass the
review to register for required classes beyond Graphic Design II.

Who's eligible?
You must be a currently-enrolled student or transfer, have
completed or given credit for all foundation courses and
ARTS 271 Graphic Design I, and have completed or be currently
enrolled in ARTS 370 Graphic Design II.

What do I submit?
10-12 examples of your best work. This must include 4-5 pieces
from foundation courses, and 4-5 from design classes. You are
encouraged to revise previous design class work. You may also
include 2-4 works from other studio courses and/or outside of
class (e.g. professionally-produced work). You may include 3D
work.
Only digitally-oriented work (web sites, interactive) should
be submitted on disc (this is flexible).

How do I submit?
Your work should be contained in some sort of portfolio, case,
or folder that allows easy access. Portfolios must be delivered
to VAB 116 by 10:00am on April 11.

Anything else?
Please clearly label your portfolio with your name and include your
I.D. Number. Also, please indicate whether you intend to enroll
in the Summer or Fall Graphic Design III sessions.

How do I know if I passed?
Results will be posted and portfolios will be ready for pickup by
2:00p.m. the same day. Students passing the review will be cleared
to register before the end of the week.

ODU’s Student Activities Council (SAC) is seeking an ODU art student to redesign and maintain their website for the 2008–2009 academic year.

Responsibilities include: design and maintain SAC website; keep site up-to-date by refreshing content and images; create test pages, templates and other graphical elements; manage the content pipeline; maintain weekly and monthly calendars; manage photos when available; ensure site design integrity and quality control; resolve any website issues; take pictures at SAC events; meet weekly with director and adviser; attend all weekly executive meetings; attend all GA meetings; attend Fall Retreat; attend Banquet; support/attend all SAC events; 6 office hours/week; attend the Summer Executive Meetings; attend Transitional Training Session; maintain general SAC publicity; advertise GA meetings; assist director with promotional materials; scrapbook publishing.

The Employment Guide, has an opening in our Norfolk office for Full-time: ENTRY LEVEL GRAPHIC/PRODUCTION DESIGNER. This position will require knowledge of specific graphics applications on a Macintosh platform. Designer will be responsible for newsprint advertisement creation/re-design on tight turnaround times and deadlines. This position is good for someone entering the design field who wants to gain more experience working with print and web. Hinrichs! Millman! Sagmeister!

This month and next will be big months for big designers visiting the area. In addition to the aforementioned Debbie Millman lecture here on March 20, our local AIGA branch has just announced two other major events that every designer must attend.

AIGA Medalist and Pentagram partner Kit Hinrichs will speak here at ODU, in Batten Arts & Letters Building, Room 1012, on Thursday, March 13. A reception will be held at 6:30pm, presentation 7:00pm. A limited number of FREE seats are available to ODU students (contact me for information).

Kit Hinrichs' accumulated design experience spans over 30 years and incorporates a wide range of projects. At Pentagram he leads a graphic design team with expertise in corporate communications and promotion, packaging, editorial and exhibition design. He has been an instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He has been a lecturer at numerous design associations and universities across the country.

Hinrichs' work has been honored and published widely, and several of his pieces can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. He is co-author of four books: Vegetables, Stars & Stripes, Long May She Wave and Typewise. He is an executive board member of both the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and the Director Art Center and, a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).

In 2004 he was awarded the profession's highest honor, the AIGA Medal, in recognition of his distinguished achievements and contributions to the field.

If that's not enough, Stefan Sagmeister will arrive Friday, April 18 as part of his tour promoting his new book, Things I Have learned in My Life So Far. Stefan Sagmeister is one of the most influential graphic designers in the world working today. Since 1993 Sagmeister Inc., has focused on all things printed, including posters, brochures, books, and graphics and packaging for music clients. Sagmeister's award-winning work has been recognized in national publications such as The New York Times, Time, Rolling Stone, and Wired. He's created iconic album covers for Lou Reed, the Talking Heads, and the Rolling Stones. Born in Austria, he now lives in New York City.

Debbie Millman will speak at Old Dominion University on Thursday, March 20, 7:00pm in the Diehn Fine & Performing Arts Center, room 136. Sponsored by the ODU Art Department's Visiting Artists Program, the event is free and open to the public. Debbie Millman has been in the design business for 25 years. She is a Partner and President of the Design division at Sterling Brands, one of the leading brand identity firms in the country. Debbie is a board member of the National AIGA, and teaches at the School of Visual Arts and Fashion Institute of Technology. She is also an author on the design blog Speak Up, a regular contributor to Print Magazine and she hosts a weekly internet talk show on the Voice America Business network titled Design Matters. Her first book, How To Think Like A Great Graphic Designer, was published by Allworth Press in 2007, and her second, Essential Principles of Graphic Design, will be published by Rotovision in Summer 2008.

The first half of Season Five of Design Matters with Debbie Millman launches on Friday, January 18th at 3:00 PM on the Voice America Business Network. This first half of Season Five will run from January 18–April 25, and the second half will begin in September. The Fall guest line-up will be announced in August.

Design Matters airs live weekly on the Voice America Business Network, now the industry leader in Internet talk radio. The D.O.D. mailing list is now a blog, something that's long overdue. While it eliminates those convenient e-mails to your in box, this allows opportunities and info to stay accessible for longer. I'm still shaking this out so more functionality (and a less template design) will be added, especially, I hope, a CSS link. I'll still be posting employment and internship opportunities, events, lectures, workshops, etc. And many of the features of my academic website, like links, we move here.
