In Memory of Robert McCullough

The Art Department is saddened by the passing of Robert McCullough, Associate Professor of graphic design on Monday, July 13. A full-time faculty member in the art department since 1980, he developed the department's emphasis in graphic design in 1988. Professor McCullough left a successful, award-winning advertising agency in the Hampton Roads region to join the faculty, first as a professor of painting. After developing the graphic design program, he helped manage its growth in the years that followed.

"His desire to interact with students and other scholarly professionals, rather than convincing the public of the merits of the various businesses that hired his crew over several years, caused him to take this unusual step for a designer, which is lucrative — in a very practical way," says Art Department chair Linda McGreevy . "But, Robert, like many of his generation, was idealistic and truly wanted to make a difference in the lives of those who would go on to convince the public of the merits of products and services as their own careers developed.

"Demanding, intense and entirely dedicated to his field, he made a big difference for many — some of whom … would only realize his significance later. The faculty, current and emeriti, full-time and adjunct, are realizing our loss now, and it is with heavy hearts that we bid him adieu," McGreevy added.

Professor McCullough's work both in fine arts and design has been exhibited nationally and in Europe, including the U.S. Department of State World Trade Show in Greece, Turkey and Israel; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Eastern Washington University, Cheney Wash.; and Contra Costa College, San Pablo, Calif. He also exhibited his work locally at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia in Virginia Beach, the Visual Arts Center in Portsmouth and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News.

Professor McCullough earned a B.F.A. degree from ODU in 1971 and an M.F.A. in design from Syracuse University in 1978. He is survived by his wife, Harriet McCullough, an adjunct assistant professor of graphic design at ODU with whom he maintained M&M, a small design agency, and a daughter and stepdaughter.

ODU Student Activities seeks Graphic Designer

The ODU Student Activities Council (SAC) seeks a graphic designer to work on its website, major and minor posters to promote events, t-shirt designs and much more. SAC is charged with planning social, cultural, intellectual, recreational and community programs for the campus community. It is a student led, student planned initiative. Poster design opportunity

Make-It-Click, a project of researchers at EVMS is seeking a graphic design to create a poster series. The overall goal of the project is to increase the seat belt and back seat use of tweens (8-12 year olds). The project is funded by the Department of Transportation, and is taking place in elementary schools in Portsmouth. There are many elements to the project; one of which is to target the parents because we’ve learned from focus groups with the kids that the parents are a big part of the problem.

The designer will need to create 6 posters that depict Black individuals in various car safety-related scenarios. For example, one of the posters will stress the importance of compromise by parents in order to increase the back seat use of their children, and would depict the interior of a car with a mother driving and a tween sitting in the back seat. The tween will be asking his mother to change the radio station to Z104, and the mother will reply “sure.”

The posters can be pictures or illustrations; the research team just doesn’t want it to look like clip art. Also, each poster needs to have two versions: one in color and one in black and white. The black and white versions will be mass-produced by us, so the final product would need to be capable of that (i.e., converted to a computer).

Graphic designer/photography intern wanted

BLACKHAWK! is looking for a graphic designer/photography intern. This person will assist with layout and design of packaging, instruction guides, brochures, ads, catalogs, etc. They would also assist with marketing tasks. We have a digital photo studio on our premises and would like someone who can assist with product photography. We design the majority of our pieces to be full color so this would be an
excellent opportunity for someone to get their feet wet and eventually get
some nice pieces for their portfolio.
