Student Worker (Media Specialist)

Position: Student Worker (Media Specialist)
Location: ODU, Gornto TELETECHNET Center
Job Level: Student Worker

Must Be:
• Proficient in Microsoft Word 2007
o Examples of Assigned Tasks Include: Creating Frequently Asked Question guides with screen shot pictures and step by step information. Editing exams to match specific formats. Editing content for grammar and typo errors. Transcribing lectures from audio or handwritten sources.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel 2007
o Examples of Assigned Tasks Include: Creating and updating Excel files for faculty and staff. Using Excel files to find and copy information to MS Word.
o Using tab/label and equation functions in Excel.
• Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint 2007
o Examples of Assigned Tasks Include: Creating, Updating and Editing PowerPoint Presentations. Utilizing PPT Functions such as image manipulation, drawing tools, html editor, and inserting audio and text from other sources. Turning PPT Presentations into PNG, JPG, GIF or Bitmap files. Placing audio into PPT slides or removing it from them.
• Proficient with Adobe Acrobat 8
o Examples of Assigned Tasks Include: Creating PDF files from Word Documents and Scanned Images. Combine PDF files from various sources into one PDF File or break a large PDF file into smaller segments. Edit PDF files for content, grammar, typos etc.
• Proficient with scanning equipment and image editing software
o Examples of Assigned Tasks Include: Scanning and editing images using various image editing software. Creating PDFs using the scanning functions. Scanning picture slides into a slide scanner and compiling them into image galleries using PowerPoint.
• Able to multitask and stay organized (on task).
• Able to learn and utilize new software quickly
o Which will include software like Camtasia, Respondus, EXE, Dreamweaver, Questionmark, Captivate, Dragon.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Desirable skills:
• Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop (or another mainstream image editing software) and Dreamweaver software.
• Proficiency with BlackBoard
• Ability to create frequently asked question guides (FAQs)
• Ability to type and transcribe quickly and accurately.
Note: Experience with the above-mentioned programs should extend beyond the basic levels taught in introductory courses like BUSN 135: Introduction to Office Productivity Software or other basic level computer courses.

Designer Sean Adams of AdamsMorioka will present a lecture on his work Friday, April 16, 7:00pm in Diehn 136. The lecture is sponsored by AIGA Hampton Roads.

Sean Adams is a partner at AdamsMorioka in Beverly Hills. He has been recognized by every major competition and publication including; Step, Communication Arts, Graphis AIGA, The Type Directors Club, The British Art Director’s Club, and the New York Art Director’s Club. AdamsMorioka has been exhibited often including a solo exhibition at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Adams has been cited as one of the forty most important people shaping design internationally in the ID40.

Sean is President ex officio and past national board member of AIGA, and President ex officio of AIGA Los Angeles. He is a Fellow of the Aspen Design Conference, and AIGA Fellow. He teaches at Art Center College of Design. Sean is a frequent lecturer and competition judge internationally. Adams is the co-author of Logo Design Workbook, Color Design Workbook, and the series, Masters of Design. AdamsMorioka’s clients include The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Adobe, Gap, Frank Gehry Partners, Nickelodeon, Sundance, Target, USC, and The Walt Disney Company.

Freelance opportunity at SwimWays

SwimWays in need of someone to shoot images of finished packaging for documentary and planogramming purposes. The ideal candidate requires a basic knowledge of photography and Photoshop; and be able to work at our Virginia Beach location. We will work with the right candidate to train them to perform the job, and provide the computer, camera equipment and lighting studio. The student will provide the enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Pay is from $15 to $25 dollars an hour based on abilities and the job will require 100+ hours. We are flexible on scheduling and able to work with a student's class schedule between the hours of 7:30 am and 5:30 pm.

Internship with ODU's Study Abroad Office!

Old Dominion University’s Office of Study Abroad is seeking a dynamic intern for the Spring 2010 semester. The Office of Study Abroad is a cooperative, team-driven environment looking to redesign our print and online promotional and marketing materials.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and have experience developing print materials such as a logo, brochures, posters, flyers and other publications. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop is required. The selected candidate is also expected to utilize campus computer resources, or provide a personal computer and software. Experience with web design and an interest in international study or travel is preferred, but not necessary.

While this is a 10 hour per week, unpaid internship, we are flexible with scheduling and can work around classes. The intern will have the opportunity to take a leadership role in projects, often from concept to product, and will be able to truly develop his or her portfolio. Internship at Blackhawk!

Blackhawk in Norfolk is seeking a design intern. Must have Quark and/or InDesign, Photoshop and photography experience. Familiarity with the software is sufficient but proficiency with the use of a digital camera (which we have on site) is necessary.

The candidate would be working on packaging, ad, and brochure design as well as gain product photography experience. They would work with our in-house team of designers, photographers and videographers. There is an in-house photo studio equipped with professional lighting.

Pay is $10/hr. and can work around a class schedule. The atmosphere is fun and fast paced most of the time. They have three graphic designers, a videographer and the majority of staff shoot photography.

Entry-Level Graphic/Production Designer

Pay Rate: $11-$12

The Employment Guide, (a division of Dominion Enterprises) has an opening in our Norfolk office for Full-time: ENTRY LEVEL GRAPHIC/PRODUCTION DESIGNER. This position will require knowledge of specific graphics applications on a Macintosh platform. Designer will be responsible for newsprint advertisement creation/re-design on tight turnaround times and deadlines. This position is good for someone entering the design field who wants to gain more experience working with print and web. If you know your programs and can take a project from concept to production in a short amount of time, we want to hear from you.

Knowledge and Qualifications:
• Mac platform (OSX.4-.5)
• Adobe CS (Indesign/Photoshop/Illustrator, etc.)
- Flash, Dreamweaver, Keynote a plus
• Microsoft Office
• Ability to work with tight deadlines/fast turnaround times
• Can multi-task and handle several projects at once
• Can communicate well with others and independently with little supervision
• Hours: 8:30 - 5:30 (Mon-Fri)
